James Pitchford

James obtained an MA honours degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, studying physics and chemistry before deciding to specialise in materials science and metallurgy. He remained at Cambridge to complete a PhD in materials science. His research work focused on the high temperature deformation of materials, especially oxide ceramics, and contributed to the development of materials for aerospace components and electronic substrates. He is a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
James entered the patent profession at the beginning of 2000, and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2005 and a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2006. He joined Kilburn & Strode in 2006.
James specialises in patent work in the physics, electronics, engineering and materials science sectors. He has particular experience in acting for clients whose activities cross between these sectors, for example in the aerospace and avionics industries, or in the field of electromechanical devices. He also has a keen professional interest in computing and communications technology. James has drafted, filed and prosecuted a diverse range of patent applications, in the UK, Europe and internationally, including an appreciable number relating to computer software, and some in the fields of business methods and e-commerce. He is also experienced in opposition and appeal cases before the European Patent Office.
