Michael Maggs
Partner
Michael is Kilburn & Strode’s IT partner, and is a European and UK Patent Attorney. He studied for his first degree in Natural Sciences (physics) at the University of Cambridge, where he graduated with first class honours in 1980. After completing his degree he moved to Geneva, where he carried out postgraduate research in particle physics at CERN.
Michael trained as a Patent Attorney with Kilburn & Strode, qualifying in 1987. He was awarded the Gill prize in that year for the student achieving the highest overall results in the national Patent Attorney final examinations.
Following his appointment as a partner in the firm in 1991, he obtained a law degree (LLB Honours) from the University of London.
Michael’s main areas of interest and expertise are in IT and physics-related inventions.
• In the IT field he handles a wide variety of software inventions including business methods, e-commerce and other internet-related applications, data and image processing, data compression, encryption, mathematical modelling, neural networks, agent-based systems, and object-based programming techniques.
• In the physics field he deals with such topics as semi-conductor devices, optics, medical physics, imaging, data collection and analysis, and quantum physics.
His clients include a large number of high tech companies, universities, academic tech-transfer organizations, spin-offs and start-ups.
Michael is a member of the Institute of Physics, the Society for Computers and the Law, and the Chartered Institute’s Computer Technology Committee.
