Richard Howson
Partner

Richard's technical degree is in Mechanical Engineering and French from the University of Birmingham. He graduated in 1997, having spent one year with engineering group GKN on automotive R&D, and won a prize for his final-year project on the design of a new light aircraft. He entered the patent profession in 1999 after a short period working as an engineer. He is qualified as a European Patent Attorney, as a Chartered UK Patent Attorney, and is also qualified in Singapore following a spell practising in that country. Richard has been a partner of Kilburn & Strode since 2008.

His patent practice includes drafting new applications, prosecuting applications worldwide, managing large portfolios, European Patent Office opposition work, and representing clients at oral proceedings before the EPO. In terms of technical subject matter, Richard specialises in the mechanical and electrical fields. He has knowledge of a wide range of technologies in these fields, but has particular experience of: civil aviation, especially mechanical systems, electrical systems and manufacturing technology; IC engines and engine control; power electrical machines; and mobile telecoms devices.

In recent years, Richard has been involved in setting and marking the European Qualifying Examination - the exam that leads to qualification as a European Patent Attorney. He is a contributing editor to the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorney's Patents Training Manual, and speaks regularly on patent-related topics in the US and Europe.

Richard is currently a Council member and the Secretary of FICPI-UK.

The 2011 Edition of the Legal 500, a leading guide to the UK legal profession, names Richard as "a particular expert in oppositions".
