Richard Ashmead
Consultant
Richard is a European Patent Attorney, Chartered Patent Attorney, a member of the Institute of Trade Mark Agents and a Registered Trade Mark Agent. He qualified as a patent and trade mark attorney with Kilburn and Strode in 1976 and became a partner in 1979. His BSc (Hons) degree is in chemistry from the University of Manchester.
From a general IP background his work is now predominantly in the trade mark field. He has particular experience of the development and control of international portfolios of trade marks, of the trade mark aspects of character merchandising programmes and of resolution of trade mark conflicts, notably oppositions.
He has lectured on various topics to professional and academic audiences in the UK and abroad, and has assisted the UK Trade Mark Registry in the training of senior examining staff. He is responsible for the contributions on trade mark filing practice in both the United Kingdom and Community "Trade Marks Handbooks" published jointly by CIPA and ITMA, and likewise contributes to INTA's "Worldwide Trademark Transfers" reference work. He is also the Editor-designate of INTA's forthcoming "International Opposition Guide". He is an active member of INTA and ECTA and is a member of CIPA's Litigation Committee through his particular interest in techniques of pre-litigious resolution of IP conflicts.
