Life Sciences

Our Life Sciences group has earned an excellent reputation for its work safeguarding the innovations and commercial interests of its clients.

We have extensive experience in acting for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies at all stages, from start-up to publicly-listed to globally-recognised, and have a clear understanding of the differing intellectual property issues that arise as a company develops. We also act for academic institutions and technology transfer companies and hence are highly experienced in issues relating to technology transfer, and handle cases for overseas clients, either directly or on instruction from intermediary patent attorneys.

Because of the different types of client that we have, we appreciate that each client has different requirements and that those requirements may change. We therefore aim to provide a service which is customised for the client's requirements, and which is able to change as the requirements change. For some clients, we act almost like an in-house department with direct contact with inventors, whilst for others, we take instructions from the technology transfer executive, patent executive or in-house patent attorney.

The attorneys in the group have scientific backgrounds in different areas of the Life Sciences, many to PhD level (see links to profiles below for more details). This allows us to be confident in handling technologies right across the Life Sciences, including pharmaceutical chemistry, drug delivery, foodstuffs, nuclear transfer ("cloning"), stem cell therapy, transgenic organisms, immunology, gene technology, recombinant protein production, diagnostics and bioinformatics. Our representation on the intellectual property advisory group of the UK's BioIndustry Association and the biotechnology committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys ensures that we are aware of and active in the latest developments in biotechnology patent law.

In addition to obtaining patents and patent term extensions for our clients, we have extensive experience in contentious work, such as litigation and European Patent Office oppositions, as well as in providing infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and in carrying out due diligence or preparing reports for public listings.
