The field of pharmaceutical and industrial chemistry is a diverse one in terms of clients and products and our Group has the breadth and depth of experience to handle this subject matter expertly. Innovations in the field of chemistry are of great importance to society in the production of new medicines and in the development of new materials or compounds for industrial use. Recent advances in deciphering the human genome may have hit the headlines, but is likely that many of the new medicines developed as a result of this new knowledge will be based on new chemical entities.
Our clients include pharmaceutical and industrial chemical companies from recently formed ventures to long-established household names and we have a clear understanding of the differing intellectual property issues that arise as a company develops. We also act for universities and are very familiar with the issues relating to technology transfer in the academic sector. In addition, we handle cases for overseas clients, either directly or on instruction from intermediary patent attorneys.
The attorneys in the group have scientific backgrounds in different areas of Chemistry, including PhD level (see links to profiles below for more details), and have had a significant amount of experience from working in the field. This allows us to be confident in drafting patent applications with chemical subject matter and in handling inventions right across the Chemical field, including organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. In particular, we have experience of drafting and prosecuting patent application relating to:
Pharmaceuticals | Alloys | Nanotechnology |
Novel Crystal Forms | Coatings | Microfluidics |
Polymers | Petrochemicals | Medical devices |
Catalysts | Personal care products | Medical and non-medical |
Semi conductors | New methods of | diagnostic tests |
Foods | manufacturing compounds or | In silico chemistry |
| materials including industrial | |
| scale processes | |
A particular strength of our Chemistry team is our ability to work on cross-disciplinary inventions, particularly in combination with our colleagues in the Life Sciences, Engineering and IT, Electronics and Physics groups.
Drafting patent applications in the field of chemistry requires a special combination of legal and technical skills which we believe that our attorneys can confidently demonstrate as a result of our experience gained in working with our broad portfolio of clients.
The attorneys in our group have extensive experience in contentious proceedings, such as European Patent Office oppositions, as well as in providing infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and in carrying out due diligence or preparing reports for public listings. We are also able to provide specialist advice on patent term extension (or Supplementary Protection Certificates) with respect to medicinal or agrochemical products.
