K&S Present US West Coast Seminar
24/06/2003
Kilburn & Strode recently presented a Seminar on the US West Coast concerning the protection of software in Europe and developments in European Patent Law. Peter Hale, partner in the Firm's IT, Electronics and Physics group, organised and presented the Firm's first IP Update Seminar in San Mateo, California on 10th June 2003. Gwilym Roberts and Juliet Hibbert also gave presentations and the seminar was attended by over 40 US Patent Practitioners.
Kilburn & Strode is proud to have co-sponsored the event with the University of San Francisco, Faculty of Law. The seminar concerned two main areas, recent developments in European patent law and protection of computer related inventions. A keynote delivery was presented by Dai Rees, Director of Examination of software patents at the European Patent Office and a further presentation was given by William Cook of Simmons & Simmons concerning European patent litigation. Robert Barr, Vice President (Intellectual Property) of Cisco Systems, Inc. gave a thoughtful summarising address over the lunch that followed. The seminar was well received by the attendees who entered into lively debate concerning a wide range of issues of European practice and the consensus seemed to be that the seminar was extremely useful and should be repeated.
If you would like to receive a copy of any of the papers presented by Peter, Gwilym or Juliet at this seminar (on Technical Effect, Oppositions at the European Patent Office, The Community Patent, and Revisions to the European Patent Convention) please email Peter Hale
