Kilburn & Strode normally takes between two and four scientific graduates per year, to train as European and UK patent attorneys. Applicants are typically considered between October and about February, with final appointments being made towards the end of that period. Starting dates are flexible, but are usually sometime during the summer or autumn.
Kilburn & Strode is one of the leading London firms of patent attorneys, and our standards are high. We have a large number of applicants for each available position, and we select our trainees carefully on the basis not only of the initial letter plus CV, but also by personal interview. Candidates should normally have, or expect to obtain, either a first or an upper second degree in a relevant scientific subject if they wish to train in patents.
For trade marks, candidates with a scientific degree are welcomed, although we can also invite applications from graduates with non-scientific degrees if they are interested only in trade mark work.
We take professional training extremely seriously, and training our graduate assistants up to full European and UK intellectual property qualification is an important part of the work of the Partners and senior professional staff. The UK patent profession has an exceptionally good record of achievement in the European Patent Office examinations to become a European Patent Attorney, and we are fully committed to continuing that record. All assistants receive broadly based training, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. In addition to our in-house training, we ask trainees to attend the Certificate course of Queen Mary College, University of London, and we encourage attendance at other external lectures and seminars. In-house tuition in German is also provided.

CURRENT POSITIONS
Trainee Patent Attorney
We have a position for a new technical assistant to join our IT, Electronics and Physics team at our London office. This highly successful team carries out work in many different technology areas for a variety of top-tier clients: as a cross-section, we handle cases for a multinational mobile telecoms company, a household name in the aerospace sector, a British automotive engineering consultancy and new technology companies "spun out" from universities.
The successful candidate will be exposed to all of these technologies, but initially will concentrate on the civil aviation applications of mechanical, electrical and systems engineering. We are therefore looking for a candidate with a strong academic background in Physics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline; for example, Mechanical Engineers will be considered if they have a good understanding of, and an interest in, these other areas. You should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum of a 2.1 degree classification in one of these subjects.
We spend a lot of our time arguing, both orally and in writing, and about technology and the meaning of technical terms. You must therefore be able to demonstrate excellence in written and spoken English and excellence in understanding technology. Knowledge of French and/or German to a good GCSE standard is also highly desirable.
Kilburn & Strode takes training very seriously. Many of our attorneys regularly lecture and tutor trainee attorneys in the UK profession, and some in our firm have experience of setting and marking the qualifying exams. As a result, we have an excellent record of getting our trainees through their exams and of producing first-rate professionals.
You should be able to start your employment shortly after the end of current academic year. There is some flexibility as to the actual start date.
