Our patent work for our clients includes drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications in the UK, before the European Patent Office and in many countries around the world.
Applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty route are a significant part of our work. In addition, we handle cases before the European Patent Office (EPO) on instruction from overseas companies and associates, notably from the USA and Japan. Our preference is to carry out a thorough pre-filing review of all British and European patent applications, with an eye particularly to the strict practice on post-filing claim broadening and 'added matter' followed by the UK Patent Office and by the EPO.
The majority of our EPO patent work is in English, the predominant EPO official language, and the mother tongue of all the partners, but we also have fluent German and French within the firm.
We provide a full range of advice services, tailored to our clients' individual technical and legal needs in addition to the filing and prosecution of patent applications, including portfolio planning and management, watching and searching for third party rights, infringement and validity opinions, licensing, renewals and due diligence exercises.
We also have substantial experience in policing intellectual property rights and in litigation and dispute resolution. In particular we have considerable experience before the opposition divisions and appeal boards of the European Patent Office, before the UK Patents County Court (in which we as Chartered Patent Attorneys can act either with or without solicitors or barristers as required) and before the Patents Court. We also have four partners who are certified Patent Agent Litigators.
We have a wide range of technical backgrounds and experience within the firm to deal with all areas of modern technology, including life sciences, chemical, engineering, and IT, electronics and physics.
